Energiewende

Energiewende is Germany’s energy transition to a nuclear-free, low carbon emitting economy. It aims to battle with greenhouse gas emissions along with providing energy security and economic prosperity all at the same time, which is no easy task. Europe’s most populous, biggest economy wants to become almost climate-neutral by mid-century.

So far the main focus has been on the electricity production sector, with huge financial support going into development of renewable sources like solar and wind. This has enabled many cooperatives and citizens to own these new production capacities bringing challenges to the already established big players in the energy sector.

The transition of the automotive industry into electric vehicles that is gaining momentum along with the goal of electrification of the heating market with renewable resources will bring many opportunities along with many challenges. These transitions into an electric future will require a lot of new capacity and the phase out of nuclear energy along with the proposed phase-out of coal fired power generation will put a lot of strain on the German energy market.

First and foremost this transition will require a different kind of power grid. New capacity expansion is the biggest priority along with digital solutions that manage this decentralized fluctuating renewable energy supply.

This new future proposed by Energiewende also needs less and more efficient consumption of all energy sources. Point of use solutions, like BHKW technology, where own-consumption is possible that take capacity away from the power grid will also play a vital role in developing this new energy future.

However the future of BHKW solutions will depend on how much own consumption is possible instead of feeding the power grid and how many levies and taxes operators could avoid. That’s where Rotonova comes in with its DHKW solutions.
